What is Naruto? Med Reading: New Assessments for New Learning
The blogs that are linked to this blog on my list or on the Reading Rockets website (linked on this blog) contains some pertinent information about the way we as reading specialists need to rethink and retool our assessement strategies, especially in light of Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom (check out Weblogg-ed). What really irks me at times is the way everyone 'talks'about new assessments even before Web 2.0 in light of new types of literacies- but guess what it all comes down to SEA, CXC, CAPE even UWI, this non-stop rhetoric needs to be revised and one thing that I resolve to do is change educational policy. Seriously, as reading specialists we need to begin implementing some change especialy towards new assessments.
Weblogg-ed also gives some startling insights, albeit humorous, on our abiity to see problems and not find solutions (you know some of us, whine, whine, whine, we don't have, we only have, blah, blah). While I myself am quite aware of the myriad of problems facing us in the implementation of technology in the classrooms, this blog skewed my negatives somewhat:)
The other blogs present struggling readers in light of ESL learners. I myself am a firm believer of using ESL strategies to teach struggling readers, and have successfully used strategies such as noticing and oral pattern practice with my students. I love the layout and slant of your blog.
Manga and Anime always attract our male students who follow these characters with a passion unmatched by any subject done in the classroom.
I myself loved Samurai X with Kenshin and even today my laptop desktop pics are of my favourite characters from the show.
Video games in the classroom are a "reverse edged sword", high motivator but dubious outcomes, definitely there is much reading and not so much if any writing done by our students to be able to follow these shows and master these games.
I would have to read up more on how the games specifically could be used to build literacy--I hope your blog will illuminate on this dark area as time progresses
The themes in the Naruto storyline resonate with our males: being an outsider, having to prove oneself, learning to control one's gift and of course beating the crap out of the bad guys and whoever does me wrong.
As reading specialists, we have to use the interest of the students to help them improve on their literacy, so again I look forward to learning how the Naruto video games as opposed to say the manuals, magazines and the websites can help with the reading and writing of our male students
