Do people still say 411? I think I just probably dated myself. LOL. Anyway it just goes to show that if you don't keep up, by the time you do, well its too late. Its the same with this technology we are now being exposed to a technology that according to research, was here since 2003 (Spacec; 2004). the challenges we face in education today are as complex and multifaceted as our world has become. So what's the 411 on wikis? Truth is I am now discovering it myself. I got a space went on the wiki board at wiki spaces and guess what? It was not Voila! Like everything else Wikis need to be navigated and explored - alot. It is not as easy as it seems.
Same with us. The wiki is a useful tool but it needs to be navigated and explored in light of the calibre of our students, our cultural differences and well our purposes behind its use. I think the wiki is especially useful as a collaborating tool among us reading specialists, and to help decrease the isolation and self-directed autonomy common to educators. If we are to survive as reading specialists in a culture that is highly expectant of us to perform miracles - we cannot and should not do it as individual units. The 411 on wikis are its uses as a collaborative tool, and as a process-oriented technology which can empower us to help students to use whatever is their preferred mode of learning to reach our ultimate goal - teach reading.
